I like thinking of myself as provisional, personally. Did any of you catch the Brother Cadfael Mystery last week? They were trying criminals by throwing them into a river to see if they floated, if they did they were guilty. If they sank, I don't know what happened to them, but they were innocent. Trial by lawyer, it's just a subset of trial by ordeal, trust me.
