I believe the article was implying that those offering Internet service on broadband versus narrowband will be a force that could challenge AOL, especially if the FCC doesn't require cable companies to give AOL free access.

If, for example, PacBell requires you to use their Internet service in order to get ADSL, you'll think twice about using AOL as a second gateway.

Just another opinion.
