I hadn't heard these two make that statement, but I've heard many similar sentiments. My theory is that if you get out, you preserve capital, but if you get into puts and such, you can spend the rest of your life sipping pina coladas on an island somewhere. Hopefully, this thread will attract some thoughtful advice on the best moves.
