I think the banks are up in arms because they usually get paid for providing this information to advertisers and other wanting to sell something. Giving it free to the government goes against the grain.

I hope you know this was tongue-in-cheek. I run into stuff like this all the time. I once made the mistake of depositing more then 10,000 dollars in my bank business account in a single deposit. It was held up for a week because the bank is required to notify the government (It might be a drug transaction). We really do need some privacy protection for bank, credit card and other transactions.
