It was common for older people to cling to the telegraph around the turn of the century instead of dealing with that infernal contraption, the telephone. It didn't take 10 years for a complete change in this attitude to take place when it was seen how awkward telegraph was in comparison to telephone. There were many companies and many investors who bet big that telegraph would persist and telephone would remain a specialized medium. The only apps that will be killed are those of VoIP, messaging, etc. There's no money in them now. The advent of broadband doesn't make them more profitable, rather it sows the seeds of their complete demise or transformation into broadband oriented services like videophone. The carriers or PC makers, or OS writers will include such apps free. They couldn't charge for them now anyway.
