Not much different, I'd guess. Do you really think that nobody else could or would have figured it out? How much of what Edison did was based on the work of long-forgotten scientists that came before him. We only remember the ones who took the final step, but they did not do it in a vacuum.

Not denying the importance of individuals - I have always been a bit of an individualist myself, and have often been accused of being excessively so - but I disapprove of polar positions, and consider them generally to be the work of inferior minds. The inferior mind sees right and wrong, good and bad. The superior sees dynamic balance, and shifts to accommodate it.

It seems I can be as doctrinaire as anyone....
