NEW YORK, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Shares of Ascend Communications Inc. rose in pre-opening trade on Monday amid reports that Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) is in talks to buy the computer networking firm for more than $16 billion. Ascend was up at 74-1/2 on the Instinet electronic trading system from a Friday closing price of 71-7/16. An announcement regarding Lucent and Ascend could be made as early as Wednesday, industry sources said. One analyst said Lucent could pay more than $80 a share in stock for Ascend. Internet stocks, high-flyers recently amid feverish enthusiasm by investors, rose again on Monday before the bell.
