Street,
Come one now.... National Guard troops are Civilians, like you and I, 28 out of each 30 day month. If they're shooting at you, it's quite likely because you have been bad and infringed on someone else's rights or participated in a criminal act. I certainly hope that you don't believe looting is permissible. And I know that if I was out on a patrol and someone starting shooting at me, I would do my level best to perforate them numerous times before they take me out.
Is that so wrong?
National Guard troops are primarily involved in humanitarian assistance during natural disasters. They provide transport (helicopters and truck), as well helping to distribute relief supplies. Providing security ONLY would occur in a situation where the public safety is at risk (from wackos out there who think they have the right to do anything they wish at the expense of the rights of others). In the event of a disaster, I suggest you contact the National Guard officer in charge and let him know that you don't require their protection or support. Advice the local police as well... (actually, you could call them today and tell them you don't require police protection for your property.)
They have families as well. They are under state control, which greatly limits the ability of the Federal Gov't (not that I believe in a monolithic big brother style Fed) to abuse their power. In fact, many people in your community belong to the local NG armory/unit. They have their families and livelihoods at risk as well. And there is no greater desire from a NG reservist who has been mobilized than to hop back into civilian clothes and out from under UCMJ.
I was involved in coordinating relief operations for the OK bombing. I resent your inference that I was involved in anyway with that malicious and brutal attack.
I'm really aghast at some of the attitudes I see exhibited here and elsewhere in regards to the military.
Do you believe we should disband it??
