Another newbie question about MM's:

Okay, I hold 2 stocks which have been trading rather thinly lately

1. NPL, on the NYSE. My online broker gives me up-to-date price and volume. Bid size 10, ask size 35. When 1000 shares go through at the ask, the ask size drops to 25. Seems straightforward enough.

2. ASCT, on NASDAQ. Bid size 10, ask size 10 (3 15/16 bid, 4 1/16 ask). 1000 shares go through at the ask. Bid size remains 10... 1000 shares go through at the bid, same thing.

Are the MM's absorbing shares and making a few 1/16's off the "trade at bid/ask?" They could get stuck if the stock runs. What do they do if this is the case?
