If the split date is the 20th then the date for buying before the split would be (T+3)=20.
I believe that the exhanges have finally gone to T+3 settlement, so if the split date is May 20th, then the last trade date (prior to the split) is May 15. If the official split is May 23, then you can buy pre-split on May 20.

As you say, 'buying between 6th/19th losing money'?, If a stock paid a dividend on the 20th, it would be X-Dividend on the 15th. Therefore, on the fifteenth, a stock paying a 1 dollar dividend, for example, should trade at $1 lower than the previous days close; all else being equal.
