>If Apple made its money by growing a peripheral market for other companies then your argument would *make sense*. But since they make money selling computers that people want to buy, it doesn't.<

Apple doesn't try to make money off *every* peripheral and add-on software sold -- in sharp contrast to Microsoft. [Exactly why are these guys in the joystick and keyboard business?]

By giving 12 year-old SCSI the heave-ho, they stimulate the creation of new devices by creating demand. AAPL can then point to all the nifty new FireWire/USB toys as evidence of the Mac platform's growing acceptance. Virtuous cycle.

They also protect the price of their older inventory for those who demand legacy ports.

AAPL wins both ways.
