Comparing SMARTDRV to anything else is besides the point since we are talking about Windows 95 and not Windows 3.1 here. The point you make about Microsoft not having the fastest software for caching is well taken, but there are other concerns.

Microsoft spent hundreds of millions and several years implementing, testing and debugging Windows 95. If they are messing with any of the internal operations in undefined ways they will not get a blessing of Microsoft (read: no sticker). Clearly this could be addressed with a simple statement from the company. Why do you think they were so coy when you talked to them?

As for the warranty issues. It's not the "hardware" but the "system" which Dell, Gateway and others support. Those contract/warranty issues do not give people carte blanche to toss whatever software they wish onto a system and then get support after it trashes things.

Way, way too many unanswered questions and given the black past (I was going to say checkered but they are all black squares) they've got some serious explaining to do. I am making assumptions primarily based on the companies own statements. The disabling or severely curtailing of Windows 95 multitasking is a perfect example of that. It should be obvious that they haven't spelled out to me or anybody in the public domain what they are doing or how they are doing it.

So replace "service contract" with "warranty and "system" with "computer" because you are correct that that is ambiguous and certainly could read as having the potential to physically damage.
