BTW, AG has let the hedge funds go short 8,000 tons of gold to finance their escapades. Guess who loaned them the gold? All he has to do is ask for some of it back. LTCM made him reluctant to do that too fast. It has also been rumored that he asked the Japanese not to buy gold aggressively as the yen appreciated to avoid the hedge funds from posing greater systemic risk. The yen carry trade was the other big source of cheap capital for the hedge funds (along with willing banks). Watch the price of gold in the next week or two, it will probably start to creep up for the first time in a generation as AG gives the funds a little squeeze to remind them who is running the show. AMZN at al are in the cross hairs.
