A Supreme Court decision is not a law of the land (it's not self-executing). A citation to it as authority by a judge is necessary to uphold or deny some specific legal order. Any judge who cited tthe Trinity decision would be instantly committed to the luny bin by the next higher court, perhaps into the cell next to your very self. The arguments are "dicta" -- defined as idle words of argument and illustration written to annoy the parties and printed at public expense to perpetuate the confusion.
