To: Gambit From: Jim B Monday, Jan 11 1999 11:50AM ET actually in my profession... working for IBM and then TANDY I've found MOST people have but just one phone line at home.. but let's think about this seriuosly.... are people willing to buy @HOME service for $40 to $50 month... when they can spend about $10/month with their local phone company... most people I know would NOT pay more than $20 month because they don't see the need.. it's like there are people out there using 486's because they fit their needs... they don't need to upgrade to a Pentium II 450. However, this cable modem market is just now emerging. The stronger companies will MARKET a perception to the consumer "YOU NEED CABLE MODEM SERVICE FROM US". Some people will still stay with their slower ISP's... but as the world market/business moves toward doing more and more on the internet (especially business's -- which for now I've heard @HOME cannot be delivered to business but don't know why.. this is what my broker said)... more and more will find that time is of the essence... and IF ATHM can work with reliable services like TCI and MARCUS... etc.. and can maintain support with AT&T and build other alliances... what I see happening is the TECH junkies out there like you and I buying this @HOME at $40 month... and when enough of us do that... they can then begin to lower the price.. in closing, it's this simple... remember paying $300 to $400 month for a cellular phone and that did NOT include any minutes.. or very few... no one could afford it... but now a vast majority of people have cell phones... well, cable modems and telephones are different... but certainly if someone said to me, "would you like a $50 month cell phone with unlimited talking or a cable modem?" It would be a tough decision, but I'd take the cable modem.. knowing that the internet has EVERYTHING on it.. then I'd wake up and realize that there are no good cell phones out there anyway for $50 month with UNLIMITED calling... but guess what, @HOME is unlimited! was this confusing?? hope not... my personal take on this... cable modems will revolutionize the internet and significantly grow it's user base... I own CSCO, IBM, MSFT... and as of today.. ATHM.. by the way, you can post this on the ATHM thread.. I'd prefer you do.. like to see if anyone has any further comments. I can't post public messages.. thanks
