Rob, I'm not so sure one should be categorizing Oracle along the same lines as the Internet Craze or tulipmania stocks. Oracle, first and foremost, is a real company with real earnings and an established track record as a market leader. I will say, however, that their strategic vision of Internet Application computing will certainly put them on the road to becoming THE dominant force in end-to-end enterprise resource planning application software. SAP, Baan, JDEC, PSFT, Manugustics,... will continue to stumble as Oracle increasingly comes to dominate ERP and RDBMS apps. Soundview's estimate of a short term to longterm mkt cap of $55 to $80B is probably on the low side. My estimate(for what it's worth) 3 to 5 years out would be in the $125-150b range. I think the press release(below) nicely captures what is just the beginning or tip of the iceberg in the ERP, RDBMS, Ecommerce mkt place. Who will be the major player(s) 5 years from now? Certainly not Baan, PSFT, JDEC, Informix, Sybase.....?????. I'll put my money on Oracle.
