From a technology standpoint the components have to be smaller, lighter and use less power than desktop components. That's why they are notebook components are move expensive and notebooks are behind on the commodity curve. You can currently assemble a desktop from off the shelf components. That is not the case for a notebook. Nevertheless, prices have dropped dramatically in the last 18 months from $5000 to $3000+ for a top of the line and $3000-4000 to $1500-$2500 for a good mid-line notebook.

Oh - saw MB answered this already also mentioning the cost of the screen.
