Apart from exploiting interest in the episode to an extreme, the gang that writes the show is in danger of falling into the trap of LA Law Syndrome. One rationale for having a cop show, or a show at a hospital, or a lawyer show, is that dramatic things happen as a result of the occupation. In its last few seasons, LA Law fell into the trap of having one damned lurid thing after another happen to recurrent characters, until their lives began to resemble The Twilight Zone, or perhaps a John Irving novel (beware the under-toad!). Anyway, there is such a thing as over doing it. After gut-wrenchingly killing off Andy Jr., this was cruel. Also, the business about letting him go was trumped up. Almost anyone would take the last roll of the dice. After all, it isn't as if he's going to suffer for years.
