Greg,

RE: Incendiary bombs did more damage to Tokyo and killed more people than both atom bombs put together.

Just finished watching a two hour special on the H-bomb on PBS. We dropped a firecracker on Hiroshima compared to the Mike blast, the first real H-bomb blast. What a story! Leaves me with the impression that those where the days of giants: Oppenheimer, Bethe, Ulam, Teller, von Neuman (and their Russian counterparts). It is amazing to me that they could carry out elaborate proof of theory calculations using only blackboard, slide rules, and a few primitive mechanical calculators.

Von Neuman did have access to (ENIAC?), but it was used to confirm what had already been worked out on paper. It's fascinating to ponder how the bomb project would have progressed if there had been just one Pentium class computer available.
