Aware - Recommended Minimum Holding Period: 2 Years

In spite of all you've heard about it, high-speed Internet access is one of the most underhyped technologies out there. To me, there's nothing about personal computing more upsetting than the speed of current modems. Here's a sign of how much faster net access is in demand: when a survey asked people whether they'd pay $40 a month in order to get high-speed internet access, over 80% said yes. As you can see, as soon as all the infrastructure changes are made, this will be a multi-billion dollar industry. There are two types of high-speed access that will be available: cable and digital subscriber line (DSL). DSL can bring Internet access speeds of up to 2Mbps (35x faster than a fully optimized 56K modem) over current phone lines with few infrastructure changes. This beats cable access, which may require more than 6 years for all the necessary changes to be made nationwide. As for Aware, they own patents on various types of DSL technology, patents that they license to 3Com, Siemens, and Lucent among others for a nice profit. If they can keep expanding on current innovations, as well as land deals with Cisco, Nortel and a few other companies within the next few years, Aware's earnings (current expected 5-year growth rate is 58.5%, but could be over 75%) may be among the few things that will grow faster than the speed of the Internet.
