Alltel has entered into a purchase agreement to buy a mom and pop teleco. Aliant Communications (formerly Lincoln Telecom [previously Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph]) is the only Teleco for most of southeast Nebraska. Aliant also has the only full coverage network for the state of Nebrsaka. Over 17% of Aliant is still owned by the founding family. The third or fourth generation scion is getting into his sixties.

See the announcement. go2net.newsalert.com

Aliant does not offer DSL service they announced some time ago that they were holding off on ISDN roll out because they felt DSL would be far better. Once they saw that their prediction was correct, they proceded to ignore DSL and roll out ISDN. More $'s. TCI is the cable company, and cable modems are nowhere on the horizon either. There is a bum's rush to be the last to offer high speed service. Forty miles from Lincoln, Cox Cable and US West are duking it out with competing high speed connections in Omaha. Oh, isn't de-regulation a panacea.

I am soon to own Alltel with a low basis.
