It sounds awkward, but I don't see anything grammatically wrong with the construction. Both pronouns are in the objective case and are the objects of the preposition "between".

I think it sounds awkward because in the feminine personal pronoun, the possessive and objective forms are identical, whereas with the masculine we have "he, his, him".

Consider the expression "between her and her mother" -- same construction and OK grammatically.

Add these to the pet peeve list:

"If I would have known you were here, I would have called you."
