I installed Linux on the laptop, dual boot with Win95 today. Not too bad, but not easier than a raw Win95 install, either. I used the Red Hat version. I managed to lock up the laptop for a while, but I finally figured out that I had the 'resume' feature repeatedly restoring a frozen Win 95 session, nothing really to do with Linux.
On the other hand, once I got going, it certainly is easier and more consistent than NT Server to do complex admin of. Plus a free DB, a free web server, tons of free tools like c++ and so forth. Quite a value. It included a tool to shrink my Win95 partition without losing my Win95 installation, which worked very well, albeit fairly technical to do. No second chances on that one.
So, easier than MSFT server products (and faster), but not competitive in ease of use for regular consumers yet either. IMHO.
