01/12 12:31A (WJ) WSJ: SBC Communications Plans High-Speed Internet Service

SBC Communications Inc. is expected to announce plans to make vailable high-speed Internet service to some 8.2 million residential customers in its territory by the end of the year. The service, known as asymmetrical digital subscriber line, or ADSL, delivers fast Internet service via traditional copper telephone lines. ADSL, which requires special equipment and installation, is the Bell telephone companies' response to cable modems, which deliver fast Internet-access speeds via coaxial cable lines. SBC, San Antonio, said it plans to offer the high-speed line plus Internet access to residential customers for $49 a month. The carrier plans to waive one-time installation fees for customers who sign one-year service contracts.
