China's Shanghai Pudong International Airport Signs $2 Million Contract for Unisys Airport Passenger Processing System
Contract Marks Milestone for Unisys, Which Now has Passenger-processing Contracts With the Top Five Airports in China
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 1999-- Unisys Corporation today announced a contract valued at $2 million to implement the Unisys Airport Passenger Processing System (APPS) at the domestic terminal of China's Shanghai Pudong International Airport, currently under construction.

With APPS, agents at the Airport will be able to improve departure control procedures, increase staff efficiency and productivity, and provide more personalized customer service to passengers.

China's aviation industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, with ambitious plans to construct new airports and renovate existing facilities in major cities throughout the next decade.

Upon scheduled completion of construction in October 1999, Shanghai Pudong International Airport will be one of the largest international airports in Asia. It will serve as the major international airport for the Shanghai municipality, operating in parallel with the current Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

APPS is a user-friendly series of software tools that automates passenger and baggage processing for airports. The Shanghai Pudong International Airport Authority has acquired four modules of the APPS suite, including Check-In Assistant, Local Check-In Assistant, Boarding Control Assistant and Load Planning Assistant.

APPS will put intuitive Windows-type graphical screens at Pudong International Airport agents' fingertips, enabling them -- with minimal training -- to check-in passengers and baggage and complete reservations and departure control procedures more quickly and efficiently.

Implementation of APPS at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport is scheduled to begin in early 1999. Cutover to live production is scheduled to occur prior to October 1999, in anticipation of the 50th National Anniversary of China.

Currently, APPS is in full operation accommodating day-to-day passenger handling at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

''This APPS contract is yet another milestone in the long-standing 13-year relationship between the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Unisys,'' said Alan Cheung, general manager of Worldwide Transportation, Unisys China Limited.

''It also marks the fifth major APPS win in China following a string of successes, including Air China, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shenzhen Huangtian International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport, since we initiated this airport program in March 1996. Unisys now has APPS contracts for the top five airports in China.''
