I think Atlanta is definitely competition heavy. Bellsouth and Powertel have been slashing each others throats for some time. The financing issue has always been a problem for me as well but as the utility industry moves more towards deregulation, SCANA will concentrate more and more on its investments that are outside of regulation. This could bode well for PTEL.
The one thing that kills me about Bellsouth is the differing rate plans based on competition. I live in Columbia, SC and because no PTEL competition exists in my market Bellsouth is higher than they are 60 miles down the interstate. I here of potential package deals between SCANA and PTEL. I guess they believe one bill for multiple services will be attractive. Are they correct? Also, it seems a little late in the game for Sprint on this stuff. Build-out is tough yet it seems impossible for Sprint to stay out of offering this service. Everyone is offering free long distance now and that is still Sprint's core biz. I guess they know they have to change or rely completely on their enterprise data fees. With ION not living up to billing, they have to minimize the risk by diversifying everywhere they can. Personally, I have not had a long distance bill over 8 dollars for over a year now. I have to use the digital phone for biz anyway so I max out the plan and call form home on it as well. I need to clue you in on some interesting twists on this theme that I had heard about coming down from PTEL. Also, do you know why I get heavy interference on my monitor screen every time my digital phone starts to ring. The monitor will fuzz up just slightly about 3 seconds before the phone rings and throughout the duration of the call. Interesting and frightening at the same time. Sorry to ramble on so long.
