Acer Laboratories Inc. Supports Rambus Memory to Advance Consumer PCs
Acer Laboratories to provide PC chipsets using Rambus 800MHz memory
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 1999--Acer Laboratories, Inc. (ALi) today announced that it has licensed 800MHz memory interface technology from Rambus Inc. [Nasdaq:RMBS - news] and will provide PC chipset products supporting Rambus DRAMs during 1999.

The Rambus-based chipsets will allow the performance of high-end desktop PCs to be available in affordable consumer PCs.

Rambus memory enables the DRAM industry's highest level of performance -- 1.6 gigabytes per second of peak bandwidth from a single device. Designed for high volume applications, Rambus DRAM devices use conventional DRAM cores, silicon fabrication techniques and memory modules. For PC main memory, a Direct Rambus memory system will fit within the same physical, power and thermal profiles of a similarly configured 100MHz synchronous DRAM memory system.

''With Rambus memory support, the consumer PC owner will enjoy ample performance for CPU-intensive, video and 3D graphics programs and games,'' said Dr. Chin Wu, President of ALi. ''Rambus technology is a key element in our new products and will be a primary interface to DRAM for PC main memory controllers for 1999 and beyond.''

''ALi's record of being able to quickly ramp leading-edge PC chipsets in high volume will help accelerate the proliferation of the Rambus memory throughout the entire PC market,'' said Dave Mooring, VP and General Manager of the PC Product Division of Rambus Inc.

ALi plans to introduce a new generation of PC chipsets with Rambus memory support during 1999. In addition to ALi, over 50 companies are providing Rambus system components, including RDRAMs, modules, connectors, clock chips and production test systems. PC OEM system cost will benefit from the economies of mass production.
