I think you got all backwards, as usual:)

First, excessive advertising may be a sign of
inventory build-up for Intel CPUs.

Second, the real scenario looks more like this:

Yes, those ads bring in customers, but "in where"?

Right, into a local "Best-Buy-Fry".

What happen then? They see $799 and $999 price
tags on equally equipped and EQUALLY performing
brand-name machines, bundled with a brand-name
printer and ready-to-go monitor... compare with
$1,499 and $2,799... you know the result!

Last time I checked, AMD retail share is still
increasing, not decreasing. Thanks to those
Intel-paid ads I guess.
