Isn't the USB slower than SCSI? I know someone who bought several iMacs for a school music program where they use MIDI and they've been doorstops all this time. Still no USB MIDI interface so they had to dig out the Macs they were going to throw away, that the iMacs were designed to replace, to use those older ones.
