These are two examples of a common type of error which I call "Mistaking homophones for homographs" where similarity in pronunciation causes mistakes in spelling. Perhaps the most common example of this occurs with 'to', 'too', and even at times 'two'.

Other examples of this confusion:
(a) 'bare' and 'bear'
(b) 'do' and 'due' (although a confusion with 'dew' seldom occurs)
(c) 'their', 'there' and the contraction 'they're'
