Hmm... I thought that for every buyer there must be a seller... MMs just cannot "buy the price down", there must be a real seller. Then you are suggesting that MMs are acting as buyers and buy shares from these sellers with their own money. Then when an actual buyer comes in with an order higher than what MMs spent for a share, MMs sell them their shares, thus making a profit. Did I understand you correctly?
