<< Is that how you'd characterize Chinagate too? >>

What's been leaked about the secret 'chinagate' report indicates that the policy of technology transfer being revealed was initiated long ago in a Republican administration, in a secret document that has since gotten the Hughes Corp and Loral guys off the hook. According to a wolf blitzer interview i saw a few days ago.

I imagine that is why the Repubs have stopped pressing this and the Demos aren't saying anything about it either - it was supposed to be secret, and nobody wants to talk about such a policy in these times, which are so different than the 1970's and 1980's.

If any of that at all is true. I don't know anything about it, myself. Except that the engineers appear to have acted independently in the best interests of Hughes corporation, in line with what they thought was policy.

You want to complain about technology transfer to the Chinese, go dig up Nixon. Or cross-examine Bush. Me, I think that inquiry goes nowhere. Basically, we probably wanted the Chinese to be a credible counterforce to the USSR. Above my pay grade to judge at this point in history.
