.........POS ONE is a sophisticated point-of-service system that will replace the aging integrated retail terminals (IRTs), placing the USPS on an equal footing with the world's leading retailers. The USPS plans to deploy the system over a three year period replacing 63,200 IRTs, which are more than seven years old. The aging IRTs are requiring ever-increasing maintenance and contain outdated components. They were designed for cash management and accounting purposes only.

"As a result, the IRTs offer almost none of the transaction information we need to support sales, marketing and operations management efforts effectively," said Steven Youngblood, POS ONE project manager.

The AOI system will be the "underpinning" of a track and trace system. In addition to all the necessary retail functions, POS ONE will provide PO Box management, mailing rules and restriction guidance, and ZIP Code lookup.

"Clerks will be able to determine immediately whether a money order being cashed was recently stolen or whether there are post office boxes for rent in another local office," Smith said, "The system will be able to update the ZIP Code database nationwide immediately after changes are approved.......
