TiVo must be using Sony... guidetohometheater.com January 6, 3pm The Philips press conference got underway at 3pm, with a new 64" (diagonal) HDTV rear-projection system slated for release later this year at $10,000. The set features three 9" CRTs and displays images at 1080i with SVGA and component-video inputs. Also on display was a co-branded Philips/TiVo hard-disc-based video recorder, aimed at replacing the VCR for those who prefer time-shifting broadcast content. Philips calls this concept "Personal TV" (as in personal computer). While the display on the HDTV set was outstanding, the feed from the TiVo box was clearly the poorest-looking picture in the room, with excessive grain and motion artifacts. Philips also previewed their new line of DVD players, all featuring DTS, and announced that recordable DVD will be available in the year 2000. SGHT's Michael Fremer claims he spotted at least five DTS DVDs being used in the Sherwood demo. We'll have more on the DTS releases soon. ---- Would one of you lurkers, tell me who Replay & Tivo use for encoding?
