George: My impression so far is that people seem pretty optimistic about the biotech sector, and attendance at this year's H&Q is about the same as last year's. Maybe one reason for optimism is that several companies were able to show graphic proof that their products work. For example, ImClone displayed some before and after photos of patients with head and neck cancer who had received combination therapy with one of their products (C225). The before photos showed several large lesions around the patients' throats and necks. In the after photos, the lesions were gone - a complete response. Several presentations included this type of material. Also, companies like Centocor and COR were able to show the beginning of what may prove to be impressive ramp up in sales. I will try to attend the analysts wrap-up session on Thursday, and will let you know how they sum up the state of the biotech sector.
