I think we'll move from the current pin configuration to the
ATA-66 interface within a year or so

How will this work with mixed drives? Will there be one 80 pin cable coming from an 80 pin connector on the mobo? Will we be able to use pin adapters? Can we use an 80 pin drive on a 50 pin connector? Should one consider a drive with 80 pins in a 50 pin system from a plan ahead point of view??

(not counting stuff like drive image files.)

I like keeping as much on my machine as possible including a few Drive Images and backup operating systems. I have much better luck finding things on my computer than searching through my collection of CDs and paper.

I also want to get away from playing CD shuffle..I want to load my Corel Draw ancillary discs and stock data discs and then put them back in a box and forget about them. Another option is an external CD tower with a dozen drives but it takes up space and would cost a lot more.

I bought my first scanner in the days of the 486 and 240 MB harddrives. My intent was to significantly reduce paper. Boy was I wrong. Scanning documents at high resolution ( have to be able to read that fine print) was not an option on a small drive.

The Polaroid 1600 X 1200 resolution digital camera has some appeal. A few hundred high res photos will take a piece of a 17 GB drive. Hopefully reasonably priced higher resolution cameras are in the near future.
