Larry,

I'm just looking at all the various product categories, and I can't think of a case where a component of a packaged good product maintained end user brand preference over a long period of time. PC's have broken a lot of marketing rules, just look at the growth of the direct mail order market, so maybe the Intel brand is sustainable for the long haul, over finished product brands. If anyone can think of a finished product where a component is more important to the end user than the product brand, let me know.

I believe Intel has done a great job of leading the industry in technology and deserves it's current consumer loyalty. The marketing of MMX should extend and expand the awareness and power. I'm looking down the road more than 2 or 3 years, when I suspect consumer PC's will be available in the $500 range. What happens then?

The only thing I'm sure of is that this business will change dramatically as PC's merge with TV's, VRC's, phones. The rules and the business models will change as well, and it will take a very nimble company to keep up.

John
