Hi Sowbug:

the verb "careen" is in fact misused frequently when the speaker means "career."

I don't recall seeing or hearing that confusion, so I don't have a feel for the situation you mention. I've never thought of the two words in the same sense. The noun "career" (except in its archaic meaning of "course", from French carrière) is linked to profession or job, and the verb "careen" means lurching out of control, as with a car careening before a wreck. At least that what I use the words for. I'm not saying there aren't other ways the words may be used.
