DRT, I remember recently thinking (and posting) that platinum would simply be substituted for palladium if the price of the latter became too dear. But thereafter I read somewhere else that it took years of experimenting, development and retooling for industry to adopt palladium for catalytic converters, and that it would be an expensive and prolonged process to revert back to platinum for this particular application. It would be interesting to explore further whether industrial substitutions of precious metals are feasible.
