Hi Charles:

<< If 1-2 mbps symmetrical is "the answer," why not use HDSL, which is here and cheap right now? >>

Could you be a bit more specific about the pricing. I thought the customer pays T1 rates for HDSL full duplex link and the modems are priced quite high.

<< True, for the moment you only get 768 full duplex over one pair,
but for residential applications that's plenty for a long time.>>

Thats what Bill Gatz claimed about 640 kbt of RAM in the PC. What a fiasco that was.

<< And the HDSL vendors say they'll have 1.5 mbps pretty soon, i.e. in a year, over a single pair.>>

My understanding is RADSL is here and now not in a year.

<< Has anyone mentioned the backbone issues, i.e. what happens when you hook these big pipes up to the Net? Don't we have to wait until we have ubiqutous ATM, or at least frame relay, until any of these things can go mass-market? >>

I think it will evolve gradually. First the service will be offered to selected businesses, then to much wider range of the businesses and finally when the pricing will become acceptable for consumers it will be offered to consumers.
