Patriot Scientific Announces Alliance With Espial Group Inc. to Provide Internet Embedded Application Solutions
Company Specializes in Developing Java Software for Internet and Consumer Devices
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1999-- Patriot Scientific Corporation (OTC BB:PTSC - news), today announced that it has entered into an alliance with Espial Group, Inc., in which that company's innovative software for embedded and Personal Java will be driven by Patriot's powerful PSC1000 -- the first-to-market, Java-specific microprocessor.

Espial Group's embedded Java development tools and Internet application suite, including its industry-leading Java Web browser combined with the PSC1000, now enables Patriot to offer customers a complete solution for Internet and consumer devices. The combination will permit customers to quickly exploit the power of the Internet to develop applications for Java technology based Internet devices like set-top boxes, smart phones, PDA's, hand held, and other Internet embedded products.

In forming the alliance, Patriot joins several other high technology companies that have entered into similar alliances with Espial since its formation in 1997 as a developer of Java software for Internet and consumer devices. Espial has relationships with International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM - news), Sun Microsystems Inc. (NYSE:SUNW - news; NYSE:SUNW - news), Netscape Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:NSCP - news; Nasdaq:NSCP - news), Mentor Graphics Corp. (Nasdaq:MENT - news; Nasdaq:MENT - news) and Microware Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:MWAR - news; Nasdaq:MWAR - news).

''We're extremely pleased that Espial sought us out to partner with it,'' said Patriot's president and CEO, James T. Lunney. ''As with other recently announced alliances, we again have the opportunity to improve the pedigree of our chip. By partnering with an industry leader offering superb embedded Java solutions, we move yet another step closer to penetrating the exploding marketplace for embedded microprocessors.''

''Embedded application developers using Java are demanding ease of use and flexibility in the software solutions we provide, as well as less memory, real estate and power consumption in the hardware that powers our applications,'' said Espial's president, Jaison Dolvane. ''Patriot's microprocessor extends the scope of our software solutions by providing a fast and powerful platform for embedded applications focused on a new breed of information devices that permit connections to the Internet, whether at home, at work, or on the road.''

A 1998 Forbes magazine overview of the burgeoning embedded systems marketplace estimated that total sales will reach $27 billion by the year 2000.

Espial Group develops enabling technologies for consumer devices and information appliances. A tightly coupled user interface and software development process ensures the delivery of superb and easy-to-use solutions.
