TALX Signs Two Dozen Service Contracts from Middle Market Organizations, Adding 100,000 Records to its National Database

The Work Number Brings Efficiencies to Employers with Less than

10,000 Employees

TALX Corp. (NASDAQ:TALX - news) announced that it will add 100,000 records to its proprietary database of employment and salary records as a result of signing two dozen service contracts for The Work Number® in recent months with middle market organizations -- companies with 10,000 employees or less.

The Work Number®, TALX's automated employment and salary verification service, allows automated access to the nation's largest database of employment and salary records, which, since its inception in 1995, has rapidly grown to comprise more than 20 million employee records from over 400 employers throughout the United States.

Some of the middle market companies that signed contracts with TALX last year and whose records are either available on The Work Number database or will soon be added include: Akron General Health System, AmeriKing, Inc., Bugle Boy Industries, Metro Health Medical Center, Oce Printing Systems USA, Inc., Rocky Mountain Administrative Services Company (an affiliate of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado), and Sacramento Bee. These organizations join more than 50 other middle market companies currently using The Work Number, including Viking Freight, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Inc. and PeopleSoft Inc.

''Many of our new middle market clients are regional medical centers,'' noted Bill Canfield, president of TALX Corp. ''The Work Number brings real efficiencies to the health care industry, allowing hospitals to increase the productivity of their administrative staff in payroll and human resources,'' Canfield added.

''The employer's cost to outsource employment verification through TALX is nominal. That's because the much of the cost to provide this automated service is paid by the verifier -- which is typically a mortgage company eager to pay a small transaction fee to obtain instant access to accurate data, to both limit the risk associated with the loan decision and to close the loan faster,'' Canfield explained.

''Some employers assume that outsourcing administrative tasks such as employment and salary verifications is a luxury that only large employers can afford,'' said Doug Kennedy, director of marketing for The Work Number. ''However, when a company takes the time to analyze the internal costs of processing verifications, including personnel time and material expenses, they quickly realize that their cost to outsource this process through TALX is cost-effective, regardless of their headcount size.''

About The Work Number

Typically before a lender grants a loan, he or she contacts the loan applicant's employer to verify the employee's employment and salary. Companies large and mid-sized are deluged with such requests for information and incur significant administrative costs to process them. The Work Number service offers employers an automated solution by allowing companies to feed their payroll records into a national database. With appropriate security clearances, lenders and other organizations can access the database automatically to verify the information.

Additional users of The Work Number service include: Domino's Pizza, Hewlett-Packard, JC Penney, Microsoft, Motorola, Procter & Gamble, Quaker Oats, the state of Florida, the state of Missouri, Sears Roebuck & Co., Sun Microsystems, Tenet Healthcare Corp., and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). A complete client list and additional information about The Work Number can be obtained by calling 1-800-888-8277, visiting the Web site at theworknumber.com or sending an e-mail to moreinfo@talx.com.
