My opinion of Dataquest just went way way down -

''Basically, we're heading toward third generation systems based on some Co-Divisional Multiple Access (CDMA).''

Co-Divisional??? That's a technology I've never heard of. But maybe it's the reporter who got it wrong, although even in that case it leads me to be suspicious of the article. But how about this quote from the principal analyst, telecommunications group, at Dataquest:

There are conflicting issues with backwards compatibility. GSM is backward compatible with all chip-rates, but CDMA 2000 is only compatible with lowest chip rates. Chip rates are like processing speeds to personal computers.''

Without doubt that is what Ericsson would like everyone to believe, but if Dataquest is swallowing it hook, line and sinker, they have a real problem. The truth is GSM is backwards compatible with no chip rate. Looks like it is time to send Dataquest an e-mail.

Clark

PS It is quite possible that he is being completely misquoted - the press is notoriously inaccurate for smaller pieces - but if so Dataquest should fix it.
