I believe that Intel will be the exception that proves the rule. First, the PC category broke the vertically integrated paradigm of IBM. Second, Intel and it's partner MSFT have "taught" the consumer to look for the component and "proven" their case by out innovating the competition to such a magnificent degree that they literally own the category.

As for a comparison, one analogy is the oil business, in that there were many variations of kerosene until Standard Oil standardized it and branded it. They gained their market share by using their early profits to outinvest the competition on production facilities and thus built a brand moat in a commodity business. The key to Intel's case is that their sizeable investments in FABs the their ability to cut prices is what will keep their brand out ahead.

It's not a perfect analogy, but none ever is.
