World PC Shipments To Top 100 Mln In '99: Nomura Research
Wednesday, January 13, 1999

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Global shipments of personal computers will grow 15.4% in 1999 to 106 million machines, according to a report released Wednesday by Nomura Research Institute Ltd. Shipments rose 9.5% in 1998 to 91.8 million, registering single-digit growth for the first time in seven years, preliminary data shows. Shipments of desktop PCs increased 9.2%, while those of laptops advanced 10.6%.

Demand grew steadily in the U.S. thanks to investment in information systems and aggressive marketing of lower-priced PCs. Japan and Southeast Asia saw sales flat or lower on the year owing to the region's ongoing economic slump. Also cited was the failure of the Microsoft Corp. Windows 98 operating system to generate the boom in sales many experts expected.
