Xerox Selects Verity's SEARCH`97 Platform for Visual Recall and Astoria

Delivers Document Management Solutions to Scale from Workgroups to Enterprise Archives

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1997-- Verity Inc , a leading provider of search and retrieval applications for the enterprise and Internet, today announced an agreement with Xerox Corporation calling for Xerox to license Verity technology for use by two Xerox business units.

In addition, Xerox is licensing the Verity search engine for research and development at the Rank Xerox Research Centre in Grenoble, France. The agreement will enable Xerox to provide highly-scalable document management solutions that meet a broad range of search performance demands.

"Extracting more value from the information contained in corporate documents is a key goal of our customers," said Tayloe Stansbury, vice president, document management systems, Xerox Production Systems Group.

"Verity will play a central role in Xerox' ability to meet this goal as well as fulfilling the ever-growing, high-performance search and retrieval demands of our customers."

As part of the agreement, Xerox will embed Verity's SEARCH'97 product technology in its Visual Recall and Astoria document management products. Visual Recall, marketed by Xerox Production Systems Group, provides a graphical tool to help users quickly analyze and discern the importance of the documents in their search results.

Astoria, developed by Chrystal Software, a Xerox New Enterprise Company, enables users to manage individual document components, rather than entire files, thereby improving accuracy and saving time spent on document creation and editing.

"Verity is pleased to contribute to Xerox' creation of a full range of document management solutions," said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Verity, Inc. "We see Xerox as taking a leading role in helping companies leverage their existing information assets and delivering enterprise-wide document management solutions."
