Michael - Re:"Paul, could you comment on the significants [sic] of this article?"

Simple - the MMX chips run the logic core at a lower voltage than the I/O pad ring and hence require a new motherboard designed to supply these multiple voltage levels.

This will have the same impact as a new fuel efficient engine announced by GM, Ford or Chrysler. How many folks will go down and buy a new engine, bring it home, and try to install it in their cars?

Moreover, new CPU chips will work optimally with newer chip sets designed to maximize the performance of the MMX instructions. In addition, new AD/DA converter chips, to handle the front & back end analog functions will be required as well as new graphics/video/3D accelerators. These all make it necessary to upgrade the whole motherboard, and essentially, the entire system.

There will be a few hobbyist types who want to do the CPU swap routine. But these guys seem to hang out on the Cyrix thread - so they will wait for the "M2". Ditto for AMD's K6.
