Phil, I'am not in the doomsday camp that predicts total chaos when
the year 2000 arrives, but as a TV X-File fan and believer that life
does exist in outer space in a form unlike our human existence, I can
imagine a day when contact will be made with results being anything
one wishes to speculate.
To continue this off-topic with an example:
We live in a 3 dimension existence of the x-y-z axis (space).
Contents of matter and energy.
We are regulated by something unknowned, which we call Time.
Another life form may, as in can, exist without the constraints
of the Time factor, simply thru existence in 4 or more dimensions.
A simple way to understand this is to imagine a life form that exist
only in 1 dimension, as in length. It would not consist of matter,
but something to us to imagine as a point of energy. To this life
the position of it is to us on a line, and to continue using our
sences to explain this life, we can see where on the line it is,
as in where is the point on the line. But this life only knows its
position, it has no concept of movement on a line. To this life, the
movement we see, it experiences as what we call Time. To it Time
cannot be traveled, as in Time Travel we know cannot be done. For
us to go back into time is a nope, and to travel forward is to simply
wait for the present to become the future, but automatically the future
become the present, so travel into time, as to "jump" over time is
as the other direction wish, = nope. But back to that one dimension
life form, that has position as Time. Now if we could observe this
one dimention life thru our 3 dimention existence, then what that life
sees as Time(position) only as a current point, we can see the "line"
that it may travel, so in effect we can see where it can exist in more
than one point. So that life knows Time as not being travelable, but
we can travel its concept of Time.
Now a life form in 4 or more dimention can view out Time concept in the
same manner, and at our same time, see past present and future of our
life, at the same time, as knowed by our sences.
So, that limit of Time for long space travel is a problem for us, not
for other life forms.
