The city of Portland and surrounding Multnomah County may be putting a major obstacle in front of AT&T Corp.'s planned acquisition of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCOMA, TCOMB).
The two local governments are believed to be the first in the country to deny a request to transfer a local TCI cable franchise to AT&T. For the companies' planned merger to proceed, AT&T needs such approval from thousands of municipalities around the country.
Portland officials met with TCI and AT&T representatives Monday after the city had denied the transfer in letters sent Thursday, said Marshall Runkel, assistant to Portland Commissioner Erik Sten, who oversees the city's cable office. County officials held a teleconference with the companies Tuesday morning.
At both meetings, AT&T and TCI officials said they would file legal action, contending the city and county don't have the legal authority to deny the franchise transfer. The companies are arguing that the issue be resolved at the federal level.
Thanks wogger
