From this week's Telephony Mag:

"Bell Atlantic leases dark fiber for New York "

Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. leased dark fiber strands to Bell Atlantic Global Networks to build out its long-distance network between New York City and White Plains. This is the first time that Metromedia has leased dark fiber to a regional Bell company.

Bell Atlantic plans to light the fiber as soon as it gets permission to provide long-distance service in New York. The company is hoping to start services by the second quarter of this year.

Selling raw capacity in the way of dark fiber to the incumbents was the vision of the original company eight years ago when it was first franchised in NYCity as National Fiber Networks, or NFN. More recently they were acquired/transformed into MFN.

Some critics and prospective backers, back then, thought that the folks at NFN were nuts.

Bravo!
